This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking. This page explains the few places where data is involved.

This website

  • No cookies, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels.
  • Fonts and all other files are served from wosm.academy itself, so visiting a page sends no requests to other services. The one exception is comments on Journal posts, described below.
  • Two small preferences are kept in your browser’s local storage, if you set them: your choice of light or dark theme (wosm:theme) and whether the background animation is paused (wosm:sim-paused). They never leave your device. Clearing your browser’s site data removes them.

Hosting

The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub states that when a GitHub Pages site is visited, the visitor’s IP address is logged and stored for security purposes. See GitHub Pages: data collection and the GitHub General Privacy Statement. We do not receive these logs.

Journal comments and reactions

Journal posts have comments and reactions provided by giscus, which stores them as GitHub Discussions. Nothing is loaded from giscus until you scroll to the comments at the end of a post; then your browser connects to giscus.app and GitHub. To comment or react you sign in with your GitHub account and authorise giscus, which keeps an encrypted token in your browser’s local storage. Your comments are public on GitHub. Moodle (moodle.wosm.academy)

Courses are taught on our Moodle site, which is a separate service. When you create an account there, Moodle stores the details you give it (such as your name and email address) and your activity in courses. TODO(owner): link to the privacy policy page on moodle.wosm.academy

Email and teaching applications

If you email us, we receive your address and your message and use them only to reply. If you apply to teach, we use your CV and letter only to consider your application. TODO(owner): how long applications are kept and when they are deleted

Discord

Our community server runs on Discord, which has its own privacy policy.

If we ever add analytics, it will be cookieless and privacy-respecting, and this page will say so first.
